The flow over Willamette is a quarter-million gallons per second. While Niagara’s flow is nearly three times that over Horseshoe Falls at 700,000 gallons of water per second, Willamette’s feat is still impressive. As part of the Willamette River, the falls span 1,500 feet, requiring a network of canals and locks to be built in the early days of the area’s logging and paper industries to enable shipping and logging vessels to pass through.
