Alaska and Louisiana – Most U.S. states divide their populations into counties, but two states in the union have gone their own way: Louisiana and Alaska. In reality, the concept is much the same, but the naming convention is different. Louisiana is divided into 64 parishes, which stem from its French origins — the former colony’s connection to the Catholic Church meant that the parish designation stuck, as the small administrative districts of the name often had their own church and priest. Alaska, on the other hand, is divided into 18 boroughs, with the remaining unincorporated regions collectively labeled “the unorganized borough.” The controversial decision to call them boroughs was eventually agreed upon in order to allow these regions versatility and skirt the political and legal associations of a traditional county.:
