Ellesmere Island, Canada – A military installation known as Alert on the northeastern tip of Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada, is the northernmost continuously inhabited place on Earth. Alert is just 508 miles from the North Pole, which is entirely covered in ice. A couple of stations on the ice are closer to the Pole but they are only inhabited for a few weeks at a time. Alert was established in the 1950s by the U.S. Weather Bureau but today, it is under the control of the Canadian government. The island also includes a radio receiving facility, a weather station, and an airstrip.:
