Cayman Islands – On his last voyage to the New World in 1503, Christopher Columbus’ ship was blown off course by wind. He sailed west and encountered two small islands full of tortoises, naming them Las Tortugas. That name didn’t stick, however. By 1526, the term “Caymanas” was being used for the archipelago, which actually includes three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. That name comes from the Carib Indian word for a marine crocodile that once thrived on the islands. The moniker eventually morphed into “Cayman,” and has stayed that way ever since. The islands were colonized by the British during the 18th and 19th centuries and remain a British Overseas Territory.:
