Florida – Florida is the one state name here that comes from the Spanish language and, in particular, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León. He landed in Florida around Easter in 1513, so he chose the name based on the Spanish “Pascua florida,” after the Spanish Easter celebration meaning “feast of the flowers.” Vermont’s name is derived from the French “vert-mont,” meaning green mountain. French colonists named Louisiana for King Louis XIV in 1682, and the name remained when the United States purchased the land in 1803. The U.S. also acquired Arkansas in the Louisiana Purchase, and the origin of its name is muddled. French explorers met the native Quapaw people, but their Algonquin guides referred to them as “akansa,” meaning “south wind.” After decades of confusion, in 1881 the state government declared the official spelling of Arkansas and the official pronunciation as “Arkansaw.”:
