Jellyfish – Jellyfish have existed for more than 600 million years and survived all five of our planet’s mass extinction events. This means that jellyfish evolved before dinosaurs, birds, or even trees. Jellyfish have no bones and so they are not found in the fossil record. However, scientists can use “soft fossils”, which are imprints left in rocks by organisms that were buried in sediments, to trace their evolution. Jellyfish are 98% water and this is thought to be one of the reasons why they have been able to survive for so long.:
