The final construction of the Oval Office was completed in 1909, and Taft was sworn in as President in March of that same year. Even though Washington didn’t know about the future office space, he still had an influence on its final design. According to the White House’s website, designs for the Oval Office originated from Washington’s Blue Room, which he requested while attempting to honor an English court tradition, the levee, where men of importance could be greeted in a formal setting — which was common in a circular room.:
